He watched from the shadows behind the bushes as she came out and spoke to the man as he dropped off the car. He was familiar with the house from when his sister would speak of it so many years ago. He knew the property; he had been there so many times. It had been several months since he poured the kerosene in the barn and set it ablaze.

That was so easy, he chuckled as he remembered that night. Right under their noses. He had watched them from the edge of the woods as they sat on the patio as their daughter played in the yard. That should have been his niece in that yard. Rage boiled in his blood. She would have been a teenager now. He wondered if she would have had his sister’s eyes. Curtis never gave her a chance. He took her life when he took his sister’s.

As he wandered towards the back patio, he glanced in the windows. Everything was still. He knew Kaylee had gone upstairs. Now would be the perfect time.

He glanced down at the blood that dripped from the rabbit in his hand as he approached the back door. He slowly turned the knob and silently moved towards the basement door as he let the blood drip and create the path for her to follow. Like lambs to the slaughter. He knew she couldn’t resist following the breadcrumbs, even if they were covered in blood.

After he placed the rabbit, he tapped his leg as Tucker approached.

“Come on, boy.” He opened the door and let the dog out.

Several hours later, Kaylee awoke with Stephanie curled up beside her. She must have climbed into the bed while Kaylee slept. Kaylee quietly got up without disturbing the sleeping child and headed downstairs. There was much to do. She needed to leave before Curtis got back. That was the plan.

Something seemed off. As she got to the bottom of the stairs, she noticed the trail of blood drops on the floor.

“Tucker?” she called without a response. Her heart sank. Could someone have gotten inside? Was that Tucker’s blood? Her legs started to shake and feel weak as they carried her across the room.

She kept calling out his name as she followed the trail. As she approached the basement door, chills shot up her spine. What if…. She couldn’t even finish the thought.

As she reached for the basement doorknob, she paused a moment. What would she find on the other side? Was she ready to face it?

“Tucker?” she whispered as she hoped a whimper or some sound of life would return from the other side of the door.

The silence was deafening.

With each step down the staircase, she heard her heartbeat echo in her head as it pounded in her chest. As she reached the final steps, the humidity from the pool landed on her skin. She stopped and held her breath before she found the courage to unveil what lay around the corner.

The blood spots continued towards the pool.
